Families have questions, we have answers. These are the most frequently asked questions, so everybody benefits. Please reach us at info@patientfirstgroup.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
You might consider hospice when curative treatments are no longer helping, and the focus shifts from trying to "fix" the illness to maximizing comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Common triggers include: frequent hospitalizations or ER visits, increasing difficulty in daily activities, worsening symptoms (pain, shortness of breath, fatigue), or a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness with limited expected recovery. If you notice declining health or repeated crises, it’s a good time to call us — we’re happy to evaluate and discuss whether hospice care may help.
Yes. We collaborate with your primary care physician, or you can choose our hospice physician. However, you would no longer be able to see specialist related to your terminal diagnosis. The Hospice Medical Director will manage your terminal condition.
Hospice care can be covered in several ways, depending on the patient’s eligibility and insurance:
• Medicare (Part A)
Most patients receive hospice care through the Medicare Hospice Benefit, which typically covers nursing visits, hospice aides, medications related to comfort and symptom management, medical equipment, supplies, social work, chaplain support, and more.
• Medicaid
For eligible patients, Texas Medicaid also covers hospice services in a similar way to Medicare.
• Private Insurance
Many commercial insurance plans include hospice benefits. Coverage details vary by plan, so our team can help verify what services are included.
• Private Pay (Self-Pay)
For individuals who do not have insurance or who prefer to pay directly, hospice services can also be provided on a private-pay basis. Families may choose this option based on personal preference, coverage gaps, or specific support needs.
Regardless of the payment source, our team will help review benefits and explain all options so families understand exactly what is covered and what to expect.
Hospice provides a full range of services designed to support comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Depending on the patient’s needs and care plan, services may include:
These services are tailored to the patient’s goals, needs, and preferences, and delivered wherever they reside—at home, in assisted living, a group home, or another care setting.
Yes, you may revoke hospice care at any time and return to curative treatment if you choose. However, If you have a change in condition you can elect to receive hospice later.
You can stay on hospice services as long as they meet the eligibility criteria:
• The patient must have a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease follows its normal course.
• This prognosis must be certified by a physician.
• Hospice services are provided in 90-day and 60-day benefit periods (two 90-day periods, then unlimited 60-day periods).
• At the start of each new benefit period, a hospice physician must recertify that the patient still qualifies for hospice care.
So, there is no fixed limit to how long a patient can remain on hospice, as long as they continue to meet the medical criteria for eligibility.
In Texas, a physician’s order is not required to evaluate a patient for hospice care. Hospice agencies can conduct an initial assessment to determine if a patient may be eligible for hospice services. However, before hospice care can officially begin, a physician must certify that the patient has a terminal illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the illness runs its normal course.
Yes — depending on the urgency and availability, our team strives to provide support when families need it most. We offer 24/7 on-call support for urgent situations, so if a family calls in the middle of the night, we’ll do our best to coordinate a nurse visit or advise on immediate care steps. (Availability can vary, but comfort and support remain our priority.)
Yes — hospice care can be provided wherever the patient resides. That could be their home, an assisted living facility, a group home, or another residential setting. Hospice services are designed to work with the patient’s current living situation. Our team will arrange to deliver care (nurses, caregivers, homemaker support, etc.) wherever the patient is living, so families don’t need to relocate unless they choose to for safety.
